Field

What I actually work on, and the shape of the problem in each case.

Graph neural entity resolution

At Minerva I built foundational AI systems and end-to-end data pipelines from the ground up to pull signal out of open-source intelligence: identifying criminal and bad-actor behaviour in a mountain of open-world data.

The approach I developed for consolidating records across sources is graph neural entity resolution — connecting the dots between structured and unstructured data much the way a human investigator does. Around it I built data-curation applications that automate acquisition, labelling and quality control with bias reduction, feeding a feature-engineering approach in high-dimensional embedding space for edge-annotation networks to learn within.

The result was an investigation tool with complex entity-resolution capability and high sentiment and risk-classification accuracy, used by Fortune 500 companies on millions of real users in production. Heavily regulated enterprises cut review time for alerts and investigation cases from hours, sometimes days, to minutes.

The geometry of learned representations

I read latent spaces through the lens of differential geometry, asking what the geometric properties of a learned representation tell us about how a model behaves and where it generalises. Curvature, geodesics and the local metric are not metaphors here; they are the objects that decide which points a model treats as near.

I am drawn to differential geometry for the same reason I am drawn to Tadashi Tokieda’s work on the visuospatial basis for mathematics. A short form can carry a genuinely complex idea about the world, rooted in nothing more than changing your view and your reference frame across spaces of different dimension.

Neurosymbolic reasoning with a consistent world view

My own experimentation now applies graph representations of multimodal data to neurosymbolic reasoning, aiming at models whose world view stays consistent. The interest is in frameworks that integrate symbolic reasoning with neural architectures through graph-based representations, so a system can hold a coherent model of the world across modalities rather than one per input type.

This is the thread that connects the work: entity resolution is a symbolic claim about identity made from statistical evidence, and getting it right at scale requires both halves to be first-class.

Orientation

Where I am, what I did before this, and what I am pointed at now.

I lead engineering and data science at Minerva, and I still write the systems I design. Before that I spent three years in a cancer-biology lab, where the machine learning turned into four publications.

The two halves are the same job: find the structure in data that resists it, then make it survive an audit. Most of my work has been in places where no best practice existed yet, which is the part I like.

Minerva

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

An automated platform for financial regulatory compliance: watchlist screening, adverse media, enhanced due diligence, KYC, KYB and client risk rating for highly regulated entities across Canada, the US and the UK. I architected the risk-overview system, the entity resolution, and the real-time open-source data extraction underneath it.

Notes

Essays, and the things I think about when I am not shipping.

I write publicly about the unglamorous parts of building a company, including the mistakes, because the version everyone posts is not the one that would have helped me.

Manifolds and differential geometry

I keep a running set of puzzles in differential geometry and topology and work them by hand. They are thought experiments about AI, consciousness and spacetime. Slow, mostly useless, and how I have understood every idea that later turned out to matter.

The philosophy of time

How we perceive, experience and structure time — from temporal consciousness to what AI does to human temporality. I think about the block universe a lot. There is something comforting in the idea that all moments exist simultaneously when viewed from outside; in that frame, we and the people we love persist eternally.

Post-labour economics

What economic systems look like under AI abundance, and how a society reorganises when traditional work becomes optional. My guess is that self-actualisation becomes the single most important unmet need, and that the human economy ends up driven by it.

Snowboarding

Flow and presence on winter slopes. Mont Tremblant and Blue Mountain are the local favourites.

Camping and hiking

Long trails where you can get lost both physically and mentally. The mountain trails around Banff whenever I can get out there.
